This never would have happened if I was wearing my fake nails!!!!- WARNING = gore and naked nails

Here is a post dedicated to WHY I WEAR FALSE NAILS ALL THE TIME as well as the thin-ness of my nails and an injury I received during a small home renovation project when I was not wearing my false nails. While I was building a shelf beneath my kitchen sink, the drill bit slipped out of and the full force of my drill, came down on my nail,  and the drill bit pierced through my nail bed.

Sorry I don't have any fabulous manicure photos for you - But thank you everyone who makes time to post nail art, polish swatches and new polish Items♥♥♥♥

PLEASE KEEP READING FOR SOME SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENT -  if you happen to find any PHOTOS on the web about the THICKNESS of human fingernails - please get in touch with me. I have been looking for some for awhile now. In this post I have  a few photos with calipers, and a few photos of comparable objects. But basically my nails are the thickness of 4 post it notes....

While I know this injury will heal and it is not the worst thing I have done to myself; it really really hurt. I cried for about 20 minutes while I was finishing up my shelf building project. I have been busy doing around the house projects lately, as well as some crafty things so I decided to NOT WEAR false nails for the week. I was surprised that this is the only damage I have done becuase usually when I get that glue gun out, or start building stuff I end up with at least 3 injuries.

Below is a photo I took after removing my polish on my middle nail the next day becuase THERE WAS NO FRIGGEN WAY I WAS PUTTING POLISH REMOVER NEAR THAT until it healed a little. It is healing fine now, but my nail is cracked straight through. And while the impact point looks bad, the pad of my fingertip actually hurts the most = three days later.

Many of these photos are my REAL nails. The polish I am wearing is a franken I made using Billie French White and Sally Hansen Flirt after 2 days of wear. I coated the underside of my false nails with Nailene Professional Pink Gel Glue for some strength, then applied 2 coats of my franken.

And so MY NAILS GROW thats not my problem. My problem is that they are extremely thin, and thats they way they are. I am finished with trying to correct this and have been an avid false nail wear-er for over mumble-mumble years.  NOTHING WILL ALTER MY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS. So while I am interested in different products and services to combat this - the volume of effort and time I have put into trying to increase the thickness of my nails has been entirely fruitless. = I QUIT. I am going to be a false nail user for life. I have had the gel nails done and all the other space age salon stuff - but this works for me. Its fast easy and FUN. My brand of choice is Nailene for these reasons

  1. Quality
  2. Their glue and adhesion products
  3. curvature of the false nail, both vertically and horizontally
  4. width -  the nails are wide enough for my thumbs and DO NOT TAPER
  5. Price. They are by far more inexpensive than other false nail products that are readily available in pharmacies and grocery stores.

Anyhoo- onto the gory photos. Thankfully I have not done any long term damage but this meas I will have to keep this nail uncovered until the injury grows out!

After removal of my middle nail polish the next day

After having a good cry and finishing my project the very first thing I did was take 2 extra strength Advil, then I took the photos. Also this was two days of  polish wear.....

The drill bit that peirced through and cracked my nail - thank god it was not pointy-er

Here are a few photos I took earlier in the week to show the thin-ness of my nails ( thats a lighter for CANDLES)

Hopefully the sheer-ness of my actual nail is noticeable in these photos.....

Comparing the thickness of my natural nail with Nailene False nails.... I took these photos last week. I was doing some experiments with glue and silk wraps etc......

I am wearing a freneken I made with Claire`s Magic and Billie White

1 post it note ( or sheets of paper.....I just had these handy )

4 post it notes

Ouch!!! I hope it gets better soon. I've never sustained such terrible damage to a nail, thank goodness.

Wow I'm so sorry about your injury, that must hurt like sheer hell. I had always wondered while following your blog why you chose to use falsies. I had seen some pics of your natural nails and thought they looked perfectly pretty, but now I understand. They are definitely very thin and I can imagine how hard it must be to avoid breaking them. Glad you found a solution that works for you!

really sorry about what happened, my dear... I'm sure it will grow out without problems... The bloody pictures make it look worse, I would be terribly scared... But healed a bit, it looks like it will make it through.

OUUUUUUUUCH!
I had a very similar accident in 2001. Hand on a shelf, drilling a pilot hole from underneath, I drilled right up through the pad of my finger and into my nail. It was one of the most painful injuries I can remember.

Hope it heals quickly!

My natural nails are paper thin as well :(

Huge injury! Glad to see that its healing and yes, I bet it friggin hurt bad.

Interesting topic otherwise, as far as the thickness of nails goes.

Whoa, I'm sorry, that so sounds like something I would do. I actually cut the tip off of my finger one time. It grew back though. Weird I know!

Ouch!!!

Yes, you do have thin nails. Is it familial?

Are they thin all the way down or just the free edge/tips?

You do seem to like medium/long nails so maybe natural nails would work for you if you were happy to go with short'n'chic. But if you don't like that look or your nails are uniformly thin then it's false nails all the way.

I'm so sorry about your injury - I can only imagine how much that hurt! Hope it heals soon.

I have semi-thick nails I think. I should measure them sometimes. My nails rarely split, if they break they'll snap. As a kid I had thin nails and I remember they used to peel easily. I don't know what has changed since but I do know that wearing polish helps to keep the moisture in them. When I want the polish to last long + ultimate protection to my tips then I paint the free edge too. But I'm glad you've found your solution with fake nails. They do look good on you!

Ouch ouch ouch!!! I'm so sorry about your finger! It does look horrifically painful.

I think that false nails are a good option for lots of people. And yours look really tasteful and natural.

ouch it hurts;(
I tried that in Feb this year...
I have to cut the nail and wait..
it took more than a month to have a normal length...another month to the original length.
after it grew to the normal length...I have to make gel nail to extend it

Ouch! Happy and quick healing on that :( Nothing is quite the same as nail bed injuries for pain and ickiness.

OMG that was actual gore! Never seen that before. Ew.

Ow! I hope it heals soon! My nails are super thin like yours but mine are super bendable and they split & tear so I keep them super short (like 0-2 mm of free nail). Of course I think the dark blues look outrageously good on short nails! Heal quickly and thanks for showing us curious folks the pictures of your boo boo and nail measurements, it was interesting! And maybe think of wearing those protective artificial nails during future projects, LOL! -JenB

ouuu ouch! That looks incredibly painful!! I did something like that back in the day and just looking at these photos sends phantom pain to that finger - it looks like it should grow out pretty quick - here is hoping!!

Ouch ouch ouch!

You can't see from my photos, but I lopped the end of my middle finger off a few years ago and the pain was worth than labour. I just about fainted.

Hope your recovery is quick!

Your nails are very thin, I don't like false nails for myself but I really understand why you chose to wear them !

Holy crap!!! That hurts to look at :( Sorry this happened to you.

About the thinness of your nails, could you maybe have an underlying health issue? I'm asking out of genuine concern, that's all.

I'm glad your healing well, Have you tried prenatal vitamins?
I know it might sound strange but, my doctor told me I should continue to take my vitamins after I had the baby because my hair was thinning and my nails were brittle. It really worked!
or you can just take regular vitamin.
hope this tip helps you :)

I hope it heals quickly. I had a similar injury too...but it was intentional. I had closed my car door and for some stupid reason I closed it on my thumb. The door had locked so I was screaming and had to get my keys to unlock my door. Luckily it didn't break my thumb but it did leave a massive dent in my thumb and it started bleeding underneath the nail. My doctor took a lighter and paper clip and melted a hole throw my nail until it hit the flesh so the bood could be drained. Now this injury was as large as yours so I can only imagine the pain. PLease be careful with your nail healing. My chipped a lot. Around the unjury opening. Maybe place a bandaid around it?

Oh, i bet that hurts a lot!
My nails are falling apart too but they're not that bad anymore
good luck with them!
